Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as a little girl. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at the college. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from college. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
